'Spiral'
 by Hana Geissendorfer

Synopsis:

All Agnes (14) wants is to win the Figure Skating Championships. At least, that’s what she thinks she wants. Agnes is on autopilot: ice skating, schoolwork, ice skating, church and ice skating competitions. Her parents are proud of her and she likes to make them happy.

Then Frankie (15) comes along, the vivacious new girl in Agnes’ training squad. Despite Frankie being her rival on the ice, Agnes is fascinated by her and does all she can to befriend her, even if Frankie’s behavior is sometimes unpredictable and even dangerous.

On the one hand Agnes' friendship with Frankie strengthens her, as she frees herself from her parents and experiences new things, but on the other hand it isolates her as she becomes inseparable from Frankie and dependent on her approval.

Agnes becomes aware that Frankie has self destructive tendencies when she first beats her in a skating competition. Frankie starts punishing herself for not being good enough and Agnes feels responsible for Frankie’s unhappiness.

Agnes reaches out to Frankie’s older brother Chris (16), as she knows how close him and Frankie are – perhaps a bit too close - but this only fuels the tension between the girls and Agnes finds herself completely estranged from her so-called best friend, her parents and the world around her.

When certain events lead Frankie to accuse Agnes of trying to sabotage her skating career, Agnes is consumed by guilt. Desperately trying to prove to Frankie that she is a friend and not a rival Agnes neglects her own needs and desires, with dangerous consequences.
